This past weekend, I was able to see The Secret Garden at the Buell Theater. I was really excited to see this new musical, because I had grown up watching the movie, and reading the book. For those who are not familiar with the Secret Garden, the story follows a young girl named Mary who must move from India to England after her family died of cholera. She stays with an uncle in a miserable, old mansion that seems to be haunted. To get out of the house, the little girl explores the outdoors, and she soon discovers a secret garden. From there, Mary seeks to bring growth and renewal to her new family.

The story itself is beautiful, and I was excited to see how it would play out on stage. Although the music and the accents were hard to follow at times, the imagery was amazing. Throughout the show, the literal ghosts of Mary’s family followed behind her, guiding her and protecting her. The musical did a much more thorough job of depicting her life in India than the movie did, and I noticed many Indian themes throughout the play. The lighting was some of the best I had seen at the Buell, easily conveying the dusty weight of the mansion, and contrasting it with the lightness of the garden. Overall, the show was very well done, and it did the beloved book and movie justice.
